English, anyone?

English, anyone?

Tip #1

Picture this: you, your partner. It’s hot and you want an ice-cream. Normally, you would say: would you like an ice-cream, love? The options are either yes or no, but if you say: how about an ice-cream? You are asking an open-ended question, which will probably get you a “yes” for an answer. Try it!

Tip #2

You are at a restaurant (abroad). The waiter notices that your glass is empty, he/she approaches you to offer you another drink. In Spanish the offer would go ‘aceita mais um?’ Or something similar, but in English options might include:

Would you like a re-fill?

Could I get you another one?

Can I get you anything else to drink Sr./Madam?

Tip #3

You are visiting a friend abroad and you are having lunch. The food is absolutely delicious and you would like some more. The host notices this and asks: would you like a second serving? (to which you say YES please!)

Tip #4

Use please and thank you at all times! For example, you are travelling abroad and the airhostess asks: what would you like to drink Sr./Madam? Your reply must include please and thank you:

Could I have some water, please?

May I have a beer and a glass of water, please?

Nothing for me, thanks

I’m ok for now, thank you

Ok, how was that? Hope you found it useful and you can use it next time! Care to send me your own tips? Send away, please!
